Yakuza series to remain a turn-based RPG

Judgment inherits the action brawler combat

Last year’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon was a side sequel that ushered in a new turning point in the franchise. It featured a new setting, protagonist and most notably, new genre of gameplay. Thanks to Like a Dragon’s success (commercially and critically), the Yakuza series will now shift to turn-based RPG gameplay permanently.

Meanwhile Yakuza’s spin-off series, Judgment takes the mantel as Sega’s action beat em’ up franchise. It basically insures the well-regarded brawler combat style originating from 2005's Yakuza, does not get left behind and will continue on.

Series creator Toshiro Nagoshi and producer Kazuki Hosokawa have confirmed the evolution in an interview with IGN:

“The Yakuza series has been transformed into a turn-based RPG. On the other hand, over the years, Ryu ga Gotoku Studio has accumulated resources and know-how of making flashy and exhilarating action games that are effortless to enjoy. We decided that we should let our signature action gameplay live on through Lost Judgment.”

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is available on PS4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Lost Judgement releases on September 24.
