Tencent launches a Facial Recognition system in games

Tech company aims to tackle gaming addiction

Tencent has installed facial recognition service in 60 of its games

Chinese game developer Tencent Games has launched a time-sensitive facial verification system which is connected with a central public security system

Titled ‘Midnight Patrol’, the initiative is designed to combat the rise of gaming addiction among minors as recent cases of teens stealing money to top up their accounts or prolonged sessions at Internet cafes have raised serious concerns for their health.

The face screening will launch on 60 titles from Tencent, include real-name registration, preventing game purchases and recent children to play between 10pm to 8am.
