The rumours are true, a new Splinter Cell remake is in development at Ubisoft Toronto and it will utilise their Sanddrop engine - used to create Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and the company's upcoming Star Wars game.
Developers Chris Auty, Matt West and Peter Handrinos describe the remake as 'stealth action refined', staying true to the original game in its linear game design with added modern QoL enhancements. They also state the game will not be open-world.
