Sony registers Sunset Overdrive trademark

Could Insomniac’s Xbox/PC game get a PlayStation release?

Sunset Overdrive gets trademark renewed.

Released in 2014, Sunset Overdrive was an action-adventure shooter developed by Insomniac for the Xbox One (and later ported to PC). Twitter user Nibellion, noticed last month that the game’s trademark had been registered by Sony last month at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Companies renew trademarks all the time as a way of insuring they retain ownership over IPs. In 2018, Insomniac games revealed they owned the Sunset Overdrive IP, though the original game is Xbox One/PC exclusive. Back in February, Drew Murray departed Xbox Studio to re-join Insomniac Games. He had worked on Sunset Overdrive while at the studio.

Does this indicate Sunset Overdrive get a re-release on PlayStation as some are speculating? We’ll have to wait and see.

Generally speaking, most gamers have associated Insomniac as a PlayStation developer, though Sony purchased the company as late as 2019. Such Insomniac titles, namely the Ratchet & Clank series, Marvel’s Spider-Man as well as the Resistance series are PlayStation exclusives. For a brief period though in early 2010s, Insomniac released games on Xbox consoles that include Fuse and Sunset Overdrive.

What do you think? Just another trademark renewal or is the PlayStation getting Sunset Overdrive?
