Many questions raised in Selene’s survival tale
‘Its Doom meets Control’, ‘it’s a realistic version of Metroid’, ‘its Ratchet and Clank for adults’, or ‘No wait it’s a new interpretation of 1979’s Alien movie’, these are the general impressions you read from viewers’ reactions to Returnal on social media. The game's visuals, story and gameplay has evoked comparisons to the aforementioned classic titles.
Set for release on April 30, 2021, this PlayStation 5 exclusive is a third person shooter with roguelike elements. Playing as space pilot Selene, the new story trailer shows her crashing into an alien planet and encountering strange beings and mysteries. Intersected with flashbacks of her past and her present crisis on the dangerous planet, Returnal contains trademark elements of the psychological horror genre.
First revealed on June 11, 2020 on Sony’s PS5 stream, Returnal is developed by Housemarque, and it utilises the latest technologies developed for the Playstation 5 such as the DualSense controller and 3D spatial audio. Housemarque wanted these features to create a visceral experience in its futuristic sci-fi story.
