Reports claim PS5 will get a new redesign

According to Taiwanese business website DigiTimes, Sony is apparently beginning production on a PlayStation hardware redesign in 2022. Suppliers such as TSMC, a semiconductor foundry, are in the prep stages of redesigning the console.

Their website’s sources state the redesigned PS5 will come with a “new semi-customized” 6nm CPU from AMD.

The question might be asked, why redesign the console so early in its lifespan and in the midst of shortages?

VGC notes that during an investor call that succeeded a publication of record PlayStation financial results, company CFO Hiroki Totoki explored various options in dealing with the global storage of hardware components, one being altering hardware designs or sourcing secondary suppliers.

“For example, we could find maybe a secondary resource, or by changing the design we could cope,” says Tokoki.

We will follow this story for any major updates.
