A small investment for now
A little over two weeks ago it was revealed the rumoured $10B USD purchase of Discord by Microsoft was off the table, now however, Sony Interactive Entertainment have played their hand revealing a 'minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round'.
Of course its highly likely Discord was in talks with both Microsoft and Sony simultaneously for many months, but you can't help but feel some strategic timing has been made by Sony.
Apart from stating an investment has been made, SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan has been scarce on details. There really is no other information about what the two companies plan to achieve with the partnership.
In the press release, Ryan states "From our very first conversation with co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, I was inspired by their lifelong love for gaming and our teams’ shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways. Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services". Hopefully, PlayStation users will eventually see the full suite of Discord services arrive to PS4 and PS5.
What would take this one step further however is Discord was the facilitator of cross-platform communication - meaning PlayStation, Xbox and PC users could all share voice and text messages. Obviously this would be a groundbreaking step for cross-platform play, so we'll have to wait and see how this all unfolds.
